You're Exactly Where You Need To Be
To live from the present moment, and to give your best to every moment you're in, is all there is.
There is no higher state to reach, no place to arrive, no destination waiting for you. There is just life, lived from here. And here's what hit me recently: the peace I keep chasing in the future is already available right now.
So why keep waiting to live, when the moment I want is the one I'm already in?
The Trap of Deferring Your Life
We defer our lives behind a wall of conditions.
First you’ll sort the finances, then your relationships, then your health, and once all of that is handled, then you’ll actually start living. We get so busy doing, doing, doing, chasing the sense that we are finally enough, that we forget we were meant to be living and enjoying it in the first place. We are conditioned to always need more, to always have something left to prove.
Yet you can never arrive at a future where you have achieved your way into feeling enough, because the moment you get there, the mind simply moves the goal posts.
The Only Obstacle Is Your Mind
When you really look at it, the only thing in the way is your own mind.
It tells you what you should do, have to do, need to do, and because we are so conditioned to listen, we believe it completely. We live inside its stories and treat them as reality, telling ourselves we can't possibly just be present because all this serious stuff needs our attention.
So we end up living the mind's version of our life instead of the one actually in front of us.
There comes a point when you realise that the minds needs are all a lie.
Sure you have real responsibilities, and your body genuinely needs sleep, food and water. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the obsessive needs. The need to always be busy, to always be doing something, to keep proving yourself. And the master trick underneath it all: that at some point in the future, you'll finally have done enough to deserve your relaxation, your enjoyment, your happiness.
I ran that program for years, and I still catch myself in it whenever I'm not being mindful.
But the season to be happy is never later, it's the one you are already in.
Where This Hits a Poker Player
Almost every player I work with is waiting.
Waiting to be happy when they beat the next stake, when they hit the bankroll number, when they finally "make it." The grind becomes a season to be endured in exchange for a payoff that lives somewhere up ahead. But later never arrives, because the second you hit the number, the mind draws a fresh line further out.
You will reach the stake you're chasing and feel exactly the same, because the feeling of enough was never waiting there for you.
And yes, I can hear the objection, because I feel it too.
Poker requires delayed gratification, so surely I have to grind and study now for results later? You're right, and you should absolutely keep pushing yourself. But here is the distinction that changes everything: your presence and your aliveness can never be deferred.
Your outcomes can live in the future, your bankroll and your game get built over time, yet your life has to be lived fully now.
Presence Is Your Real A-Game
If you’re competitive, like me, this should make you take notice: you are better at everything you do when you are present.
Presence is not the soft opposite of ambition, it is the thing that makes you sharper. Your A-game does not live in the session result or the stake you're climbing toward, it lives in the hand in front of you and the decision you are making right now. The instant you leave the present to chase the outcome, your game drops. This is why perspective and self-awareness do so much work in a strong poker mindset: perspective lets you zoom out and be grateful for where you already are, and self-awareness lets you catch the mind's story before it drags you off into the future.
Presence is not a reward for arriving. It is what makes you better on the way.
So the work is simple, and you can take your first step now.
Give your best to the moment you are in, because that is the whole game, at the table and in your life. Let go of trying to be perfect, or to arrive at some future goal. Let those things unfold naturally, without the mind's insistence on how they need to be.
You are exactly where you need to be. The current moment is all that ever matters.
